All You Need to Know About Getting Clean in Hard Water

Bathing is more than just washing away dirt; it is a great way to relax and wash away the troubles of your day. Showering in warm water should be a time to gather your thoughts, but what if your thoughts turn to itchy skin, dry scalp and a hard to clean shower stall or tub? The water you’re using could be causing some of the anxieties you’re looking to wash away. Hard water is a common problem throughout the United States, and you need to know the fundamentals of trying to get clean using it.

Making it Harder to Shine

Hard water contains excessive levels of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. These minerals can leave a residue on your skin that makes it feel itchy and tight. These elements also bind to shampoos, soaps and even shaving cream; creating a film that traps oil and dirt against the skin.

If you’ve been using hard water for some time, you may not even notice this reaction, but you can see the effects on your shower walls and bathtub. Look carefully, and you’ll see a scaly, thick residue that is difficult to clean, and now think about how your skin is dealing with this same mineral build up.

Is Squeaky Clean, Actually Clean?

A great way to appreciate your water hardness is to assess how well your soaps lather. Hard water minerals don’t just make your hair feel lank and dull, they also weigh down detergents, causing difficulties for suds to form. The harder the water, the greater the difficulty in lathering.

Using more and more soap is not just costly, it can also have a detrimental effect on your hair and skin. In fact, when you get that squeaky clean feeling on your hair and skin, it is actually because the natural, essential oils from your body have been stripped away to be replaced by a soap and mineral residue.

In fact, after installing a water softener, you may notice showering provides a completely different feeling. Your skin may feel slick like you’ve just applied lotion and this is what clean, healthy skin should feel like. You may even find that you don’t need to apply lotion every day to avoid itchy, dry skin.

Washing Problems Into Your Hair

If your hair looks different after staying in a great hotel, you may assume it is due to the complimentary shampoo, but you can’t repeat the effects when you buy the same product for use at home. This is actually because water sources have different levels of hardness and a great hotel is likely to have installed a water softener to avoid plumbing system wear and tear.

Hard water can have a massive effect on your hair; it can cause dullness, frizziness, flaky scalp, faded color and tangling. You may even find that your hard is difficult to style and unmanageable.

Fortunately, these and many other issues can be resolved with a water softener. A whole house system eliminates the hard water minerals as your water supply enters your home. This will allow you to bathe in delightfully soft water and start to truly enjoy your shower again.
