Winter is Easier to Endure with Softer Water

When we think about practical ways to endure the harsher winter weather we often consider blankets or turning up the heater. One of the surprising things that may not have crossed your mind is a water softener for your home. As strange as it may seem a water softener can actually make your winter months far easier to endure. Let’s examine this issue in more detail; you may be surprised at some of the winter water softening advantages. Winter is Easier to Endure with Softer Water

Dry Skin Issues

When temperatures drop in the winter months, the humidity follows, and this can have a dramatic effect on your skin. It’s not unusual for people to develop skin conditions, including red blotchy skin, dryness, and itchy or flaky skin. This is bad enough in isolation, but when this is coupled with hard water that contains high levels of minerals, the skin problems can be exacerbated.

Winter Hair Problems

Another problem that’s often experienced in winter is hair that becomes brittle, dry and tangled. This is usually caused by going from colder outdoor windy air into a home that’s heated and needing to use the hairdryer more often. Again, these issues are made far worse when you’re also using hard water to wash your hair. One of the properties of hard water is that it’s known to dry out hair and when all these factors are combined the result is split ends and breakage.

The Effects of Hard Water Use

Using a whole house water softener will remove the minerals that make the water hard. When water is saturated with minerals, it prevents soap and shampoo from dissolving correctly making it harder to lather up. When you have cleaned with soap and need to rinse hard water will be less effective than softened water. Residues of soap are left behind on your skin and hair which will contribute to the problems we have already discussed. People with existing skin problems, such as contact dermatitis, skin chafing, and acne, may find that their symptoms worsen when using hard water.

Making a Switch to Soft Water

When you make a change and switch to soft water for bathing, you will quickly notice the results. Washing hair and skin is more comfortable as the soap will lather quickly, and you will need less of it to get super clean and feel fresh. When you rinse the soap away, there will be no residue left to clog up your pores and tangle your hair. Of course, these effects are not just limited to an improvement in your hair and skin for winter. When you wash your clothes in soft water, the results will be far better than those washed in harder water. Because the washing soap works better and it’s fully rinsed away the clothes will feel cleaner and softer against your skin. This is good news for winter when you may need to wear some extra layers of softer clothes to stay warmer. All of these properties will make you feel more comfortable over the winter and carry over into the rest of the year.
